About

I am a composer and conductor, professionally active since 1985, and an academic employed by a University in one capacity or another since 1991. I currently lecture at The Australian Institute of Music in Sydney, Australia in the academic studies Department and supervise postgraduate students in the Sound, Composition and Production department.

From 1995 - 2010 I taught at the University of Wollongong, Australia, where I am currently Honorary Principal Fellow. Throughout my tenure here, I have striven to have my research profile led by my creative practice, and have tried to maintain the appropriate professional involvement to facilitate this.

So my career has tended to revolve around creative positions such as  Guest Artist at The American University in Washington D.C., Visiting Composer at James Madison University, The Cleveland Institute of Music, Ball State University, the University of Florida, Georgia State University and The University of Southern Florida in the U.S.A. I have conducted, and had performances of my music, in Australia, the USA, the UK, France, China, and Puerto Rico. I was a participant the June in Buffalo Festivals, The North American New Music Festival and at the 1995 Hoy Composers Course, where I was invited by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies to write for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra String Quartet.

Recent performances include the 2011 Tubamania Festival in Bangkok, Thailand, The 2011 Melbourne International Festival of Brass, the 2007 Florida Electro-acoustic Music Festival and the 2008 Aurora Festival. I was Composer-in-Residence this at The Albert Roussel Festival and The Delaware New Music Festival in 2008.

My compositional and research interests include music for orchestra, the theatre (including dance), the voice and the church, the combination of electro-acoustic and acoustic resources especially in real time (such as in his Spaces series of works), the exploration of virtuosity (Gondwanaland a concerto for tuba and symphonic winds) and indigenous Australian music (the Earth Music series).

I've been very fortunate to have performances of my music given by such renowned artists as Beverley Rinaldi, soprano, Alan Baer (principal tuba of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra), Steve Rosse (principal tuba of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra), Kevin Orr, David Goldblatt, Stephen Manes, Vanessa Sharman and Duncan Gifford, pianists, Adam Meyer, trombone, Susan Collins, violin, Harold Levin, viola, and ensembles such as The Manes Duo, Charisma, Locana, The Syzergy Ensemble and many more. My website has more details of past, present and future performances.
